Letter from the Chair
I’m writing to you this evening with great news regarding our next GVSUG meeting. First of all, it is scheduled. I know that in a previous e-mail I mentioned October 26th, but that date has been changed to November 9th. The reason is because for this date we were able to schedule one of the more popular speakers SAS Institute has to offer, Sandy McNeill. Her talk will be on PROC REPORT. For those of you who have been to SUGI or to NESUG, you may have heard of her. For those who haven’t, Sandy was one of the original developers of ODS. She currently reports directly to Paul Kent, Vice President of R&D at SAS. We’re really lucky to be getting her here and I’m looking forward to showing her what a great users group we have here in upstate NY, and so I hope that all of you are able to make arrangements to attend this special event.
A future e-mail will contain the full agenda. Some of you may be registered with SAS as being the contact person for your site. If so, you will receive a mailing from SAS Institute some time in the next month.
The meeting will be held from 3:00 until 6:00 at the Eastman Dental Center. Unfortunately, I can never remember the name of the auditorium, so I’ll have to get back to you on that. Parking will be in the parking ramp by the medical center. The cost is being covered by Howard Proskin of Howard M Proskin & Associates. You’ll need to show your parking stub for reimbursement. More details will follow.
A couple other things. First – meeting cost. If you are a member and you paid your dues at the spring meeting, there is no cost to you. If you are a member and you did not pay at the spring meeting and you want to renew your membership, the cost is $15 for the next year. For those not interested in membership, the cost is $10. Our treasurer, Marla Miller, has the status of each member. Second – Don’t forget that we will be holding our annual election for positions in the GVSUG Executive Committee. The positions are Chair, Vice Chair, Treasurer, and the at-large positions. We are also looking for a webmaster. Everyone is encouraged to nominate themselves for one of these positions. As of now, you will have to do this by sending me an e-mail. Soon we may be able to add something to our web page so that you can nominate yourself in that way. Paul Winters – is that possible? Either way, if you are interested, please do so before the November meeting so that we can get your name on the ballot.
Finally, we’re trying to build in some informal get-togethers between our semi-annual meetings. I think of them as SAS Happy Hours. These will take place at coffee shops or restaurants or bars, and will involve someone facilitating a discussion on a pre-chosen topic. Of course if the conversation ends up going in different directions, that’s ok too. These would take place at around the 5 or 6:00 hour and will hopefully encourage people that are not able to make the other meetings. More on this soon.
That’s all for now. I’ve promised you more information in a future e-mail so look out for that soon, plus a mailing regarding the November meeting from SAS for some of you. Again, don’t forget to mark your calendar for November 9th. Don’t forget about dues, parking payment, and the annual election. See you then!
