• A procedure for writing functions with DATA step source

• The pre-production DATA step/ODS interface for custom reporting

Panning for Gold: Nuggets of Helpful SAS® Code

As a SAS® system programmer of many years experience, there are several snippets of SAS code that I may occasionally or regularly use when writing new programs. I was not blessed with a photographic memory, but fortunately for me, a computer file remembers various incarnations of similar key SAS code that performs various activities.

Examples in this presentation include:

• Use of a colon modifier to delete temporary datasets,
• Special use of the sum function for contiguous variables,
• Importing of a Microsoft Excel worksheet through use of DDE,
  a many to many merge that is performed using a data step
• A method of printing placeholder output to the output window when a dataset has no values.
